The fedora and whip will return to movie screens – here’s what needs to come with them.

According to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, Indiana Jones 5 will happen – sooner rather than later. After all, when Disney bought LucasFilm, Star Wars wasn’t the only storied franchise to come in the deal.

Indiana Jones remains an iconic, hot property. Say what you will about Crystal Skull, but it was a profitable movie, and for all its flaws, it still surpassed Temple of Doom. In short, the House of Mouse would be insane to neglect it, and it looks as if they realize this.

What, however, will a finished Indiana Jones 5 look like? Will Harrison Ford be back? Will Chris Pratt, or some other marketable younger star, take over for Indy, turning him into a Bond-like figure? Will it be a reboot? A continuation? Will George Lucas and Steven Spielberg return to guide the franchise into the future? And will the fifth movie be the last one?

If you thought a lot was riding on the last Indiana Jones adventure, well, there’s even more at stake this time around. So lets take a look at ten things that absolutely, positively must happen in a fifth Indiana Jones movie – and hope that at least some of these pan out!

10. Someone Other Than Lucas Must Write It

George Lucas has a story and character credit as a writer on each and every installment of the Indiana Jones films – which means he’s pretty much batting .500. Not bad if you’re a baseball player, but as far as a film franchise goes, that’s only 50/50.

Then you bring into the equation the Star Wars prequel trilogy, which many of us are trying to repress.

Yikes!

In short, George Lucas should not be responsible for writing the next Indiana Jones movie. Not even a little bit. Not even a story credit. The series needs some fresh creative blood, frankly. Lucas can brainstorm up the MacGuffin – but nothing more. Once the core concept of the movie is chosen, he should be as far away from the script, and frankly the set, as possible.

9. Mutt Can’t Be In It

Adding a son for Indiana Jones may have seemed like a great idea to extend the series when Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was in development. And at the time, Shia LeBeouf no doubt seemed like a valid choice to play Mutt, Indy’s son, born Henry Walton Jones III.
However, LeBeouf’s very public fall from grace coupled with the ice cold reception the character received in the fourth film means that young Mutt needs to sit this adventure out.
While the character wasn’t quite terrible, Indiana Jones fans want Indiana Jones movies to centre around, well, none other than Indiana Jones. Or maybe his father.
Adding a kid? Thanks but no thanks. It’s been done, it failed, and there’s no reason to see any more of Mutt.

8. Practical Effects Are A Must

If J.J. Abrams carries through on his promise to go with a lot of practical effects on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then he’ll have done what Steven Spielberg could not in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: live up to the pre-release talk that the film would use practical, not digital, special effects, to allow things to look more real world and less bad CGI.
That was something the fourth Indiana Jones film promised that it never came close to delivering. As a result, many action scenes are already starting to look dated.
Heck, many looked horrifically bad when the film was in theatres, primarily the “Mutt Vine Swinging” scene, which was not only bad CGI, but bad physics, bad writing, and bad directing all around.
That’s a flub a fifth Indiana Jones film cannot afford to make!

7. A Trek To Atlantis

6. An Otherwise Compelling MacGuffin

If it’s not Atlantis, then the MacGuffin needs to be something good. Something spectacular. Because a fifth Indiana Jones outing could be the last, at least for the franchise as we know it.
The MacGuffin, for those not in the know, is the motivator of the film. An item or core idea. It’s always the thing Indy is seeking.
There are options: a return to religious themes, perhaps the Spear of Destiny (the spear which supposedly pierced the side of Jesus Christ) – an object greatly coveted by the Nazis according to legend (and several books on the subject). Indy has already gone after the spear in comic book form, but again, that needn’t prevent a big-screen outing featuring the Spear as the MacGuffin.
What about the lost DaVinci manuscripts?
In any case, one area the producers need to avoid is anything extraterrestrial. While the idea of aliens in the Indiana Jones universe is nowhere near as bad as some claimed when Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out (it’s no crazier than the Ark melting the faces off Nazis), you might as well try to please fans with this outing, and stay away from it.

4. The Return Of Harrison Ford(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!必须啊)

This must happen. If it can’t, don’t bother making it until after Ford is long retired from movie making. Don’t even make it in this lifetime.

Harrison Ford needs to be present in a fifth Indiana Jones film. Yes, there can be a younger Indy present. However, the best way to bring the franchise back is with Ford on board. It’s his character, and he’s what has always made the films work. Even Crystal Skull had its moments, and most of those were thanks to Ford.

It will be an interesting juggling act, coming up with a story than can span years and allow for both anold and young Jones, but it’s really the best option at this point. Ford is just a little too old to make a fifth film work on his own, but he can still be the anchor of the picture.

Besides, no one really wants to see another franchise reboot at this point.

3. The Return Of The Nazis

While the Russians were a decent stand in, it’s really the Nazis who should be back as the antagonists in a fifth Indiana Jones film.
What’s that, you say? Indy ages in the movies, and the characters are already out of the WWII era?
There are two simple solutions to this:
One, the aforementioned old and young Indiana Jones, split between Ford and a younger actor, with a story spanning multiple eras. That would easily allow for a return of the Nazis.
Or, two, you could feature remnants of the Nazis, a secret Nazi society if you will. Sound far fetched? One of the rumours regarding the Spear of Destiny was that it came under the guard of a secret Nazi society well after the war. So again, the legends are there – which is just enough to make this sort of storyline feasible.
